VINTAGE HAORI
Vintage, carefully handpicked and in very good condition for its age. Traditionally, this style of haori was worn by Japanese men as a fashionable jacket. Here, I offer it styled differently — as a unisex, oversized layer to be worn casually. This is my own styling proposal, and I make it knowing it departs from convention.

PANTS
Elastic-waist pants (large / one size), upcycled by me and my sewing team from a carefully chosen vintage kimono. Unisex. The pants are lined; the lining is a newly added polyester fabric.

A note on this fabric: “Tsumugi” (woven, not dyed)
Kimono can be broadly divided into two fabric types: yarn-dyed (“ORI”) and post-dyed (“SOME”).
Yarn-dyed fabrics (“ORI”) are dyed while still in the thread, then woven. Typical examples are “tsumugi”, “omeshi”, and cotton “kasuri”. Tsumugi is especially popular in Japan today, often in simple designs.
Post-dyed fabrics (“SOME”) are woven from undyed white thread, then finished with techniques such as “komon”, “bingata”, or “yuzen” dyeing. I feel that the kimono people overseas imagine is usually this “SOME” type — the smooth, glossy, satin-like silk of a yuzen kimono or scarf.
This haori is an “Oshima Tsumugi” — one of several distinct styles of tsumugi weave. Its finely patterned, tightly woven surface sets it apart from other tsumugi, with a dry, textured, matte character quite different from the smooth, liquid feel of satin silk. That distinctive texture is the nature of tsumugi, not a flaw.
Every piece is vintage and one of a kind.

ABOUT MATERIAL COMPOSITION
ABOUT MATERIAL COMPOSITION
Most vintage and antique kimono and haori do not have fabric composition labels. These garments were custom-tailored for individual clients, and the material details were rarely recorded directly on the garment.
Today, only mass-produced kimono sold in major retail stores include such tags. Traditionally tailored kimono—even those made in recent decades—usually do not have any sewn-in fabric composition labels.
As a result, determining the exact composition of vintage fabrics is not always possible. Based on my experience as a licensed antique art dealer and upcycling artist, I examine the fabric using visual texture, burn tests, and the known age of the kimono to make an educated guess.
If I’m confident it is 100% silk, I will label it as such.
If the fabric shows characteristics of mixed fibers or modern synthetics, I will label it as “silk & more.”
Please understand that:
I do my best to make careful judgments, but these are not lab-certified.
If you require an exact determination, I recommend using a fabric testing service in your country.
Many kimono are hand-sewn by specialized Japanese artisans called “wasai-shi”. In rural Japan, it was common during the post-war years for farmers to sew kimono during winter months for clients in cities like Kyoto or Tokyo.
I continue this tradition by giving new life to these beautiful garments. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Let customers speak for us
from 118 reviewsI've always loved the beauty of kimono fabric, so I've bought nearly 10 kimono jackets (Haori羽織). This is my first time buying an upcycled
Furisode振袖, and it's absolutely dreamy. The weather in Taiwan is still too hot right now, but I'll wear it out on dates with friends once it cools down a bit! Thank you so much for your upcycling work, and it allows us foreigners to also experience the beauty of kimonos!
I ordered for my wife. Not only she was thrilled, but so was I. I have never seen such amazing attention to detail, care and love in a product. I was truly moved by this work of art. The incredible care with which the kimono was wrapped... And the kimono itself, absolutely amazing! We enjoyed it wonderfully.
“expectations met”. that would not be a fair statement. yes, the object of desire was precisely as promoted. but upon receipt there was a personalised message in a beautiful box. the feeling of being part of really good venture. upcycling. such joy! a meaningful purchase.
yet the most rewarding was to see my wife wearing it, enjoying it.
Everything about shopping with Machiko Komono was great. From the thoughtful packaging, personal letter, the fit and the quality of the skirt, all of it was so well crafted. I have already recommended this site to friends who saw my skirt.
I love my skirt so much and thank you for providing me a lovely experience. I cannot recommend enough
From the speed of shipping to the absolutely beautiful packaging of the haori, I am exceptionally impressed at the quality! The haori itself is more beautiful and finely tailored into its newer form (as purchased) that was imaged. When I opened the package and touched the material itself, I knew it was going to be a very special piece I would FIND occasions to wear it to. I will be purchasing from Machiko Kimono in the future knowing I will get a beautiful item!
Excellent quality fabric and craftmanship! Very happy with my sheer Kimono, I got it for my mom and she was beyond happy with it
Wearing this dress, I feel so regal and beautiful. I can see the craftsmanship and care that went into it and I treasure it greatly. It’s an honor to wear. I’m so grateful to MACHIKO Kimono for finding and creating these gorgeous pieces and bringing life back to items with history. Shipping was so fast and it arrived in a keepsake container. Thank you!!
I’ve never seen such amazing attention to detail, care, and love in a product. Genuinely touched by this piece of art
I am absolutely in love with this kimono skirt! The patterns are incredibly vibrant, and the fabric feels luxurious and high-quality. It drapes beautifully and moves so gracefully when I walk. It’s the perfect blend of traditional elegance and modern style. Highly recommend!
It was absolutely worth waiting for this beauty to fly from Japan to Spain! Super elegant, original and love the way how they took care of each detail! Thank you very much:)
Perfect state, I don't even know where the damage that was indicated is! I love wearing something that has history, that had a life before joining me and most probably will have a life after me. Using it differently than intended is honoring the piece and the tradition and still being "extra" and innovative... making worlds und universes meet in wearing a unique piece that was treated with so much love before joining me makes me very happy. ♥️
Dear Machiko!
I purchased VINTAGE SHIBORI HAORI "black, flower" a year ago. I absolutely love it! I have worn it multiple times and plan to continue to do so. It is unique piece in my wardrobe and instantly uplifts my mood.
Thank you!
