Collection: VINTAGE KAWAII HAORI & MICHIYUKI

A note on this fabric: Tsumugi

The haori and dōchūgi here are vintage Japanese Tsumugi — a traditional textile with a distinctive, slightly textured surface. For this selection, I have chosen pieces that appear to be Murayama Ōshima Tsumugi, woven in the Tokyo region.

Unlike smooth satin, Tsumugi has a matte surface with a gentle irregularity to the touch. It has a warm, dry, characterful hand rather than a glossy sheen or a liquid drape. Small variations across the surface are natural to this kind of textile and are part of its quiet, handcrafted beauty.

Tsumugi of this style has been woven in many regions of Japan over the years. As vintage kimono carry no fiber or origin labelling, I select and identify each piece by its weave and appearance alone; precise regional origin and exact fiber content cannot be certified without formal analysis.

Each piece is vintage and one of a kind.
