Made to Order, from the 愛 Collection: a vintage Japanese haori, paired with a skirt upcycled from the very kimono that was originally one set with that haori. Worn together, they return to the pair they began as. Wear them together or separately.

This listing is the order form for a made-to-order set. The photos show Style "AIC002" in its original fabric, a one-of-a-kind piece. Your set will be made in the same style, from a different vintage kimono that we choose together with you.

The price shown is the base price. After you order, we will email you photos of the vintage kimono we can offer for your set, and take your measurements. If you would prefer a fabric beyond these — a kimono we would need to source specially for you — an additional cost applies; we will always confirm the amount with you before we begin.

[Size] Made to your measurements, using the paper patterns we have prepared for this style. In the following cases an additional cost applies; we will always confirm the amount with you before we begin.

  • Your measurements fall outside our prepared patterns, so the piece becomes fully bespoke, with a new pattern drafted for you.
  • Your size is larger than we anticipate and more fabric is needed — in some cases a second vintage kimono.
  • The fabric's motifs need to be matched across the seams.

[Material] Silk (see our note on how we determine fabric content: About Material Composition) The skirt lining is 100% polyester.
[Care] Dry clean only
[Packing] MACHIKO KIMONO original kimono box

*Made-to-order production takes up to 3 months. Once your set is made, it is sent for professional kimono cleaning; please allow a further 7–10 business days before shipment.

VINTAGE HAORI
As in the style photos, this style is offered as a set with a vintage haori. Depending on the order, a skirt-only order may also be possible; please ask us through the contact form.

SKIRT
Kimono skirt, made to your measurements and upcycled by 愛 and me from a carefully chosen vintage kimono. Unisex. The skirt is lined; the lining is a newly added polyester fabric.

The kimono in these photos is tsumugi. A note on this fabric: "Tsumugi"
Kimono can be broadly divided into two fabric types: yarn-dyed ("ORI") and post-dyed ("SOME").
Yarn-dyed fabrics ("ORI") are dyed while still in the thread, then woven. Typical examples are "tsumugi", "omeshi", and cotton "kasuri". Tsumugi is especially popular in Japan today, often in simple designs.
Post-dyed fabrics ("SOME") are woven from undyed white thread, then finished with techniques such as "komon", "bingata", or "yuzen" dyeing. I feel that the kimono people overseas imagine is usually this "SOME" type — the smooth, glossy, satin-like silk of a yuzen kimono or scarf.
The haori and skirt in these photos are tsumugi, with a dry, textured, matte character quite different from the smooth, liquid feel of satin silk. That distinctive texture is the nature of tsumugi, not a flaw.
Every kimono we use is vintage and one of a kind, and so is each set we make.
